Waste Composting

Since 2017, the Know How Foundation has been at the forefront of innovative waste management solutions with our Centralized Organic Waste Management (COWM) project. Located in Savardari, Khed, Pune, this initiative is dedicated to processing organic waste through trench composting, providing an efficient and sustainable method for waste management. By processing organic waste efficiently and reducing carbon emissions, we are not only addressing environmental challenges but also empowering local communities to take charge of their waste management. Know How Foundation remains committed to supporting and expanding such initiatives to foster a cleaner, greener future.

  • Waste Processed: 1,500 kg organic waste per day
  • Total Waste Composted: 547.5 tons
  • Carbon Emissions Saved: 314 tons
  • Location: Savardari, Khed, Pune
  • Year of Operations: 2017 onwards
  • Type: Trench composting

Project Details

Achievements

  • Efficient Waste Processing: The project processes 1,500 kg of organic waste daily, significantly reducing the burden on local landfills and converting waste into valuable compost.
  • Carbon Emissions Reduction: By composting organic waste, we have saved 314 tons of carbon emissions, contributing to a reduction in the community's carbon footprint.
  • Improved Waste Segregation: The level of waste segregation has improved significantly, ensuring that only organic waste is processed and maximizing the efficiency of compost production.

Community Impact

  • Grampanchayat Involvement: The local Grampanchayat has taken over the complete project, driving it smoothly and ensuring its sustainability. This local ownership has strengthened community engagement and support for the project.
  • Land Clearance Issues: While there have been some issues with land clearance, the Grampanchayat is actively following up with the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to resolve these challenges and ensure the project's ongoing success.

Home Composting

Our Composter Planters project is a decentralized waste management solution aimed at transforming household organic waste into valuable compost. Each unit is capable of converting up to 1 kg of daily organic waste into nutrient-rich compost while also serving as a planter. This dual functionality not only promotes waste reduction but also encourages urban gardening. To date, we have successfully installed over 10,000 planters, significantly reducing the amount of organic waste ending up in landfills and fostering a culture of sustainability within communities.

Farming Sustainably

Regenerative Farming initiative is dedicated to training farmers in Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA) practices. This includes guidance on organic certification and market linkage, helping farmers transition to more sustainable and profitable farming methods. By focusing on regenerative farming, we aim to restore soil health, increase biodiversity, and reduce the environmental impact of agriculture.
